What to Send Your Team Before a Strategy Offsite

A strategy offsite fails quietly when participants arrive with different assumptions about why they are in the room. We recommend a short pre-read sent ten days before the session, never longer than twelve pages.

Include three elements: a one-page context note from the CEO stating the decision horizon, a factual summary of last year's performance without editorial spin, and a list of three questions the board or owners expect the team to address.

Avoid attaching full market research decks. Leaders skim slides; they do not absorb them under time pressure. Instead, ask one person to prepare a five-minute verbal briefing on competitive shifts.

Request that each participant submit one priority they would defend and one they would defer. We collate these anonymously before day one so the opening session surfaces real tension early.

Finally, confirm logistics separately — travel, dress code, phone policy. Keep the strategic pre-read focused on substance. Confusion about housekeeping erodes trust before facilitation begins.
